What If....Women's Wrestling Edition

I was looking at certain topics I thought about writing about and there are some that might not warrant a full story or just be more interesting to just hit bullet points.

One of the topics I looked at was women's wrestling. I am a huge fan and supporter of more women having more time. I may take one of these and turn them into a bigger post but for now I want to debut this idea of "What If...".

WHAT IF ...AEW had a women's tag team division? They have enough women on the roster to pull it off and personally I would have made the TBS belt a tag belt myself but could still do a tag team division. Between Dynamite, Rampage, Dark and Evolution they could definitely find time to do it and utilize their women's roster better.

WHAT IF...the bigger wrestling companies dedicated one show to the women's division? It's odd to me that in 2022, WWE, AEW, Impact, NWA or anyone else has decided to dedicate a weekly show to the women's division. I know some have done one on shows but it is hard to sell that with little build up and storylines to sell it. AEW has 4 shows, WWE has the network on Peacock and two shows on television and now even NWA has more than one show but none are women's shows and most still maybe feature 1-2 stories/matches at best. Heck, try one of the AEW shows on YouTube or a WWE Network only show to start just to gage interest long term.

WHAT IF...they at least dedicated half a show to women's wrestling? If you wont do a full show, why not maybe a full split. You are telling me that a 3 hour Raw couldn't give one full hour to women? Or AEW couldn't dedicate half a show at least on a regular basis to them?

WHAT IF...the women had more bigger profile themed matches? We have seen cases where Royal Rumbles, Elimination Chamber matches, and AEW has had not one but two high profile street fight/unsanctioned style matches. But why not more? I saw WWE took exception to the latest tag match with Tay Conti & Anna Jay vs The Bunny & Penelope Ford for being a "gory self-mutilation" but yet men have fought in death matches and fought in bloody matches for years. I say if it is good enough for the men, it is good enough for the women.

WHAT IF...some of the current women's wrestling companies had a bigger platform? There are some women's companies like WOW, Mission Pro Wrestling and SHIMMER but sadly they don't have TV or streaming deals. So what if someone gave them more of a chance? Representation matters and if you want better women's wrestlers, give them more incentives to grow. You can't just go from bikini wrestling or one match every show to a full show over night without investing time and storylines to build interest.

WHAT IF...wrestling companies brought in more high profile women celebrities or fighters to work with? You can't tell me that having Rhonda Rousey in WWE didn't help that division get some attention. Also if you look back at wrestling history, so many memorable moments in wrestling history involve celebrities and only a couple involve women. What if AEW made a sizeable offer to Paige VanZant to join their group? What if Serena Williams was asked to be part of a story line? Heck why not a Lindsay Vohn or even a Megan Thee Stallion or Kim Kardasian (we all know she loves the public spotlight)? I mean Jay Leno once wrestled on a WCW pay per view so you are telling me that we can't bring in some women to build more interest there?

WHAT IF...there was a best of 7 series? I could definitely see a few of the AEW fueds and maybe even some WWE and others that had a best of 7 series of matches leading to a title shot. I mean Serena Deeb verse Shida basically is without the fun hype around it. I could definitely see Red Velvet verse Jade Cargill having an entertaining series or what about Thunder Rosa vs Ruby Soho? Maybe Kris Statlander against Leyla Hirsh....Penelope Ford & Bunny vs Tay and Anna Jay...Nyla Rose vs Riho. Heck I would enjoy seeing Liv Morgan vs Bianca in a series of matches. Or if Bayley is returns soon, why not her and Alexa Bliss for a title shot? Or maybe Shayna Baszler vs Rhea Rhipley,

WHAT IF...wrestling companies just tried harder to do more? All of this boils down to finally devoting some time and resources to women's wrestling. You can't just give the women one whole segment of a show or even one show a year and say, "well we tried". For decades, wrestling companies thought women's wrestling was either bra and panties matches, limited to 1 match per show and only for "attractive" women. Well maybe, just maybe if someone actually gave them the time that they give men, the whole system would improve and you might see more fans interested, especially young women if story lines and women were things they could relate to. There are many talented wrestlers in the business and others improving more and more as they gain exposure and experience. So can we stop acting like we gave them a shot or worse saying it won't sell when people in these companies aren't giving it enough of the spotlight compared to their male counterparts? You want a real revolution? GIVE THEM MORE OPPORTUNITIES!!!!!!
